Assamese poet Nilmani Phookan Jr has won the 56th Jnanpith Award, and Konkani novelist Damodar Mauzo has won the 57th Jnanpith Award.

About Jnanpith Award:

Jnanpith Award – oldest and the highest Indian literary award.
presented – annually by the Bharatiya Jnanpith to an author for their “outstanding contribution towards literature.
Instituted in 1961.
The award is bestowed only on Indian writers writing in Indian languages included in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution of India and English
The first recipient of the award was the Malayalam writer G. Sankara Kurup who received the award in 1965 for his collection of poems, Odakkuzhal (The Bamboo Flute), published in 1950.
Reward(s) ₹11 lakh (equivalent to ₹14 lakh or US$19,000 in 2020).

About the Bharatiya Jnanpith:

Bharatiya Jnanpith a literary and research organization, based in New Delhi, India, was founded on February 18, 1944 by Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain of the Sahu Jain family and his wife Rama Jain to undertake systematic research and publication of Sanskrit, Prakrit, Pali and Apabhramsha texts and covering subjects like religion, philosophy, logic, ethics, grammar, astrology, poetics, etc.
Its research and publication programme started with the publication of the Dhavala texts.
A Jain temple at Moodabidri in Karnataka, southern India, had stored for centuries its manuscript of palm leaves.
It was a 9th-century commentary in Prakrit and Sanskrit, of a 2nd-century CE work, Satkhandagama, in Prakrit on the Jain doctrine of karma.

It has published two series of texts:

Moortidevi Granthmala
Lokodaya Granthmala

It annually publishes hundreds of books in Hindi (both original and translated works) and other languages, and also presents India’s highest literary awards, the Jnanpith Awards, and the Moortidevi Award.

About Nilmani Phookan Jr:

Nilmani Phookan – born 10 September 1933 in Dergaon in Golaghat district, Assam.
He received his Master’s degree in History from Guwahati University in 1961. Although he had started writing poetry since the early 1950s.
He is an Indian poet in Assamese language and an academic.
His work, replete with symbolism, is inspired by French symbolism and is representative of the genre in Assamese poetry.
His notable works include Surya Henu Nami Ahe Ei Nodiyedi, Gulapi Jamur Lagna, and Kobita.

Awards & Recognitions

In December 2021 -Prestigious Jnanpith Award for his lifetime contribution in literature.
Phookan is the third Assamese writer to receive the Jnanpith. Previous awardees were Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya in 1979 and Mamoni Raisom Goswami in 2000.
In 1997 – Assam Valley Literary Award.
In 1981 – Sahitya Akademi Award in Assamese for his poetry collection, Kavita (Kobita)

About Damodar Mauzo:

Damodar Mauzo – born on 1 August 1944 to a Gaud Saraswat Brahmin family, in South Goa in the coastal village of Majorda.
He is notable for his novels, such as Karmelin, and Tsunami Simon, and short stories, such as Teresa’s Man and Other Stories from Goa.
His books have been translated into several Indian languages.
His first collection of short stories was Ganthon, published in 1971.
He won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1983 for his novel Karmelin, which revolves around the lives of domestic workers in the Middle East. It has been translated into 12 languages.
Mauzo also won the Vimala V. Pai Vishwa Konkani Sahitya Puraskar award for his novel Tsunami Simon in 2011.
Mauzo is the co-founder of the Goa Arts and Literature Festival. He is also an activist and worked towards the inclusion of Konkani as a language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India in the 1980s, in a movement called Konkani Porjecho Avaz.
This is the second Jnanpith Award for a Konkani writer, the first being Ravindra Kelekar in 2006.
