National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) | India’s first driverless metro
National Common Mobility Card (NCMC)
National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), is an inter-operable transport card conceived by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs of the Government of India. It was launched on 4 March 2019. The transport card enables the user to pay for travel, toll duties (toll tax) , retail shopping, and withdraw money.
What is one nation one card policy?
One Nation One Card policy simply means a single card for various transactions. With the help of this card, users can make payments through various segments such as for transit (e.g. Bus, Metro), Paratransit (parking, toll), smart cities, retails shopping etc.
Need for NCMC
- Public Transport is extensively used across India as the economical and convenient mode of commuting for all classes of society.
- Cash continues to be the most preferred mode of fare payments across the public transport. However, there are multiple challenges associated with the cash payment e.g. cash handling, revenue leakages, cash reconciliation etc.
- Various initiatives have been taken by transit operators to automate & digitize the fare collection using Automatic Fare Collection System (AFC).
- The introduction of closed-loop cards issued by these operators helped to digitize the fare collection to a significant extent. However, the restricted usability of these payment instruments limits the digital adoption by customers.
Delhi Metro’s new National Common Mobility Card
Recently, the capital is set to roll out the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), aiming to make travel by the Delhi Metro and bus services along the Airport Express Line from New Delhi to Dwarka Sector 21 a seamless experience.
India’s first driverless metro in Delhi
- The first ‘driverless’ train will roll out on the 38-km Line 8 or Magenta Line of the Delhi Metro, which has a 390-km-long network spread across the national capital and adjoining cities such as Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, and Bahadurgarh.
- Delhi Metro, now the country’s largest urban mass rapid transit system, had commenced operations on December 24, 2002 on a 8.4-km stretch between Shahdara and Tis Hazari stations.
